Jude Thaddeus - Best known as St. Jude, this apostle of Jesus is the patron saint of the hopeless. Jude was chosen as the patron saint because he was often mistaken for the apostle who betrayed Jesus because they shared the same name.

Saint Jude's most famous cure was King Abgar of Edessa around 29 CE. According to legend, the king sent a message to Jesus asking him to come and cure him of his leprosy. When Jesus said he could not come, perhaps to test the king's faith, Abgar sent an artist to return in a kind of Christ figure so that he could at least look at him. Looking into the face of Christ, the artist was overwhelmed and unable to replicate the splendor he saw. Then, moved by compassion, Jesus pressed his face into the cloth, preserving his image for the king's comfort. Jesus instructed the divine face to be brought back to Edessa while someone would arrive with the message of his healing. The king was mesmerized by the image and eagerly awaited the arrival of the healer. After Christ's elevation near 28 CE, St. Thomas the Apostle sends St. Jude to complete the mission. Jude traveled to Edessa and healed the king with the power of the Holy Spirit. After his leprosy was cured, King Abgar and many of his subjects became followers of Christ, amazed at the divine face and the way the Holy Spirit moved within St. Jude and so eloquently illuminated the Gospel of Christ. Portraits of St. Jude usually depict the saint holding this image of the divine face close to his heart as he wears it around his neck. The golden image of Christ's face symbolizes the exalted nature of the Son, the healing power of the Holy Spirit, Jude's mission of evangelization, and the close relationship between the saint and the Savior.

St. Jude is also the patron saint of hospitals, especially children's hospitals. This association with hospitals is likely due to his ministry of healing throughout the ancient world, especially his healing of King Abgar of Edessa and his patronage as an incredible saint. For this reason, children's hospitals are often dedicated to the saint.St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is perhaps the most famous institution named after the American saint.
