Hera, one of the twelve Olympians, daughter of Titans Cronus and Rhea, sister and wife of Zeus, and mother of Hephaestos, Ares, Eris, Hebe and Eileithyia. Originally she was worshipped as God (her name simply means "Lady") before her people were invaded by those whose religion would supplant and absorb theirs. So the Great Goddess, known by different names in different lands, became the daughters, sisters, wives and mothers of the Greek gods. Hence Hera's marriage to Zeus, although her worship predates his, and the oldest places of worship in Greece are dedicated to her. Today she is best known as the Queen of the Greek gods, beautiful and majestic, also called the Queen of Heaven, and associated with the Roman goddess, Juno. She is the god of marriage and childbirth. It was she who gave Heracles (Hercules) his Twelve Labors. She helped Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece. Her wagon is pulled by peacocks. In the the Trojan War, she helped the Greeks. |
